Tips For Staying Safe On The Beach

The Philippines is a haven for beach lovers. With more than 7000 islands, there are many different kinds of beaches that can be found on this beautiful country. From well-developed, commercialized ones to raw, uninhabited beaches, with enough time, patience, and perseverance, you will find the perfect beach for you.

However, the beach is not the safest of all places; whether you are in a luxury resort in the Philippines or a popular and affordable resort, the safety and security threats range from human-related to nature-related, so it pays to know how to stay safe at all times.

So before you leave your Manila property and head off to enjoy the rest of the summer on the beach, below are some tips that will help you stay safe on the beach.

  • Secure your belongings. To protect yourself against any human-related threats, make sure to secure all your belongings at all times. Even if there are very few people on the beach, it is best to keep all important items near you. Better yet, do not bring anything that is not worth losing.

  • Check signs. Some beaches, particularly those that are developed and maintained somehow, have signboards that tell you the meaning of the color of flags hoisted, if any. The color scheme may be different for different beaches so make sure that you are clear on what each color means. Take precaution based on the color of the flag that is up and its meaning.
  • Check the weather. It is best if you can check the weather reports even before you go to the beach. You would not want to be caught outside near the water if there is a possibility of lighting.

  • Choose your spot well. Whether you know how to swim or not, it is good to choose a spot that is safe for you. The safest spots are usually those that are in shallow water and those that are near any lifeguard. Never go for secluded areas where it will be difficult for anyone to help you should you need it.
  • Be aware. Do not be unaware of your surroundings. Always be alert and watch out for any danger. Being aware will be beneficial not only for you but also for anyone who is with you, even for other people on the beach that you may not know. Being alert and aware will help you warn other people of possible dangers or even call for help if others need it.
